Andres Perez hit the go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the University of North Georgia baseball team rolled past Georgia Southwestern State University, 10-6, on Wednesday during the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence, S.C.
The Nighthawks came back from a four-run deficit with a two-run bottom of the fourth and a four-run bottom of the fifth.
North Georgia’s Devin Gearhart hit a two-run single to cut Georgia Southwestern State’s lead to 5-3. Late in the bottom of the fifth, Perez had the go-ahead hit to put the Nighthawks 7-5.
With the win, North Georgia plays the winner of UNC Pembroke and Columbus State at 8:30 p.m. today in Florence.
The University of North Georgia softball team had four players land on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s 2017 Division II All-Region Southeast team.
That mark was the highest for any school in the Southeast and tied for fifth-most in the nation. Sydney Sprague, Kylee Smith and Stephanie Hartness all earned first-team nods, while Alishia Frierson was a member of the second team.
Sprague is currently the Nighthawks’ home run leader with 13 and is batting .371. Smith, meanwhile, led the Peach Belt Conference in ERA, strikeouts and wins and was honored as the PBC Tournament’s MVP.
Hartness garnered her second straight first team All-Region accolade. Her .429 batting average is tops among North Georgia players, and she leads the conference in slugging percentage by more than 40 points.
Frierson is hitting .382 with 16 doubles this season.
