Brenau University to add indoor track

Brenau University will offer indoor track to complement its track and field program starting in the 2016-17 season, according to a press release sent Thursday.

Because the NAIA considers indoor track separate from outdoor track, it will become the 14th varsity sport, not counting women’s lacrosse, which should begin competition in 2018.

Since Brenau began its track and field program four years ago, the Golden Tigers have won three straight Southern States Athletic Conference championships. They will try for a fourth straight when they leave next week for the 2016 SSAC meet in Mobile, Ala.

Brenau athletic director Mike Lochstampfor said he expects the track and field team size to increase by five to 10 athletes.

The track team currently trains on outdoor facilities at both Riverside Military Academy and Gainesville High. The outdoor program is hoping to move into the new $4.4 million athletics facility at the site of the New Holland textile mill village, about two miles from campus.
