Clark cycles to win in Gainesville

Oscar Clark never owned a sizable lead during the last 20 laps of the Gainesville Criteria on Saturday through downtown Gainesville, but his lead was enough to hold on for an eventual photo-finish victory in the Georgia Cup ProAm event through the downtown square.

Clark took the lead in the final 30 minutes of the hour timed race and managed to hold off a charging Juan Pablo for a finish that was hard to decipher with the naked eye as they crossed the tape on Washington Street.

As Clark took a lead no bigger than 10 meters midway through the race, the three leaders including Pablo and Eric Murphy were walled off from the pelaton by three riders in the middle as a cushion.

Shannon Wrege won the women’s division race with a time of 29 minutes, 32 seconds in the day’s first event. Chris Smith placed first in the Clydesdale, while James Gotsick finished first in the Elite division.

The women’s junior division winner was Zoe Frazier and Phillip O’Donnell won the young men’s division.

The road race begins at 9:20 a.m. today.
