Brenau softball splits doubleheader

The No. 12 Brenau University softball team split a doubleheader with No. 19 Auburn Montgomery on Monday.

The Golden Tigers lost the first game 4-0 and won the second 6-4.

With the split, the Golden Tigers maintain their grip on second place in the Southern States Athletic Conference where they are 17-6-1.

Brenau (26-9-1, 17-6-1 SSAC) had just three hits through the first six scoreless innings in game one.

In the top of the seventh, Auburn Montgomery had three singles and two doubles to score all of the game’s runs.

In game two, Auburn Montgomery scored one run in the first inning off of two hits. Brenau’s Tiffany Schandera opened up the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run and Caitlin Kelly followed that with a two-run single to give the Golden Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Schandera reached base on a bunt single in the bottom of the second and Morgan Smith drive her in to make the score 4-1.

Sarah Applegarth had an RBI double later in the inning to give Brenau the 5-1 lead after two.

Auburn Montgomery scored three runs in the forth, forcing starting pitcher Ellen Black from the game. The losing pitcher of the first game, Anna Maness, came on in relief.

Schandera scored her third run of the game in the bottom of the four after being walked and stealing second base.

Kelly picked up her second hit of the game in the fifth while Maness pitched the rest of the game to preserve the win for Black.

Next up for Brenau is a conference match up with Emmanuel on April 19.
