Commerce tops Social Circle 49-21, heads to state

The Commerce High football team used a strong running game to defeat Social Circle 49-21 on Friday night at Redskins Stadium in Stephens Park.

With the win, the Tigers earn the No. 3 seed from 8-A and will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Class A state playoffs.

Commerce (5-5, 4-2 Region 8-A) opened the game by outscoring Social Circle 16-7 in the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second period. The Tigers put 19 unanswered points on the board to take a 35-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The scoring settled out in the second half, with each team finding the end zone once in both the third and fourth quarters.

Jessie Savage led the Tigers' ground game, compiling 140 yards on 20 carries and scoring one touchdown, a 10-yard run.

Jamal Browner, a sophomore fullback, added 86 yards on 11 carries and touchdown runs of 1 and 22 yards.

The leading scorer on the night for Commerce was Marquavius Little, who had touchdowns runs of 7, 1 and 10 yards.

The Tigers' leading rusher this season, quarterback Cody Streetman, only had three carries for nine yards but threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Anthony Norris.

The Tigers defense forced five Social Circle fumbles on the night and was led by Kyhrie Harris. The senior had 13 tackles on the night.
