COVINGTON — Chestatee defeated Eastside in region opener Friday, 33-23 at Sharp Stadium.
Eastside struggled extremely to slow down Chestatee’s running attack. The War Eagles ran the ball effectively with their quarterback, fullback, and a plethora of running backs.
“We made too many mistakes,” Eastside Coach Rick Hurst said. “We got to fix between the ears right now; it’s not the physical part.”
Eastside came out of the gate strong, scoring on the second drive. Jomandi Smith, Carlos Huggins, Andrew Henderson and Anthony Henderson all had carries on the drive that totaled for 34 yards. Eastside quarterback Demario Terrell completed passes to Quintrell Mathis and Evan House for 21 yards.
Smith capped the drive with a 5-yard run for a touchdown at the end of the first quarter. Eastside converted the two-point conversion.
Chestatee responded quickly. Running back Zachary Cheshire had a huge drive to open the second quarter. He had runs of 16 and 27 yards and finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Eastside Jaquan Henderson took the ensuing kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown and a 16-6 lead.
Chestatee scored before halftime when Zachary Cheshire took in a 35-yard run, cutting Eastside’s lead to 16-12 at halftime.
After halftime, it was all Chestatee. On their second drive of the half, the War Eagles faced a short field and took advantage. Cheshire ran the ball effectively on the drive, and quarterback Wyatt Burgess took a 5-yard keeper to the end zone for Chestatee’s first lead.
Eastside had a chance to regain the lead after stopping Chestatee on a third down. But running back Tray Bryant ran a fake punt for a 78-yard touchdown, icing the game in the fourth quarter.
Blake Buffington scored another touchdown to finish the scoring.
Eastside receiver Evan House scored a touchdown in the final seconds.
