Alabama duo leads college golf tourney

Brooke Pancake and Jennifer Kirby of the University of Alabama fired a 4-under 68 to take first place in the first round of the Hooters Women’s Collegiate Team Championship on Tuesday at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega.

Pancake, a Top 50 Golfstat ranked Division-I player, and Kirby birdied three of the final seven holes during Day 1’s alternate-shot play to take a one-shot lead over Iowa State’s Katelynn Hogenson and Kristin Paulson.

The University of Georgia’s Abby Johnson, a Buford High graduate, and Tess Fordham carded a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for sixth place. The second team from Georgia, featuring Top 50 Golfstat golfer Emilie Burger, a Blaselton resident, and Milena Savich, shot a 3-over 75 to find themselves tied for 18th after round one.

Day 2 of the tournament will be a best-ball format and is set to begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
