Letter: Turn Old Joe around as a monument to all soldiers, a fresh ideal

For the love of sanity, take down Old Joe, the Confederate Memorial Statue in Gainesville’s square or re-task it as some nameless soldier representing all wars.. Old Joe faces to the North, as if anticipating Yankee invaders as it faces now.

Face the new Joe the soldier to the east, echoing Ronald Reagan’s idealism of a new dawning. Not the dawning of the Old South rising again, but a dawning around the world. One that exposes our greatness, if only in potential, and our failures, those of ignorance and those by force.

Let us fight, in the new light, hunger, the diseases driven by poverty and ignorance, the random infirmities of life and aging and the tragic deaths threatening to kill hope in the strongest of peoples.

Acknowledge the billions on this earth who soldier through life toward the highest of all human goals. Humility.
