Letter: Ode to Old Joe: A plea for peace, end to hate

Dear Old Joe:

I’ve crossed your path for years now. I feel a wave of grief every time I do.

I grieve for ALL the lives lost in that war to end slavery and all wars everywhere.

I grieve for ALL soldiers everywhere who were put in the position to kill.

I grieve for ALL people who have experienced terrorism and bigotry.

I grieve for ALL people whose hearts have been turned to hate.

I grieve for the American Dream.

And though I grieve, I know the depth of my grief is directly proportional to the love that I have,

For peace,

For justice,

For ALL.

Our Democracy Project is not yet done.

Old Joe, may your presence remind us to listen to one another deeply and look for the good in each other and never give up doing that, no matter what.

That is the American Dream I still dream for.

Sue Harmon
