Opinion: Times needs more diverse voices in its pages
09292017 THE TIMES

I'm relatively new to Gainesville, and I've recently subscribed to The Times. I appreciate its reporting on the recent protests, including coverage of the demands for removal of the Confederate statue in the town square (I have to admit, when I moved here, I was shocked to find such a remnant of racism in my new hometown).

I would make a suggestion, though: Given the historic nature of these protests, and given the diversity of our city and our county — nearly 30% of our community is Latinx and 7% black — I recommend the newspaper hire more Latinx and black columnists and run more stories by reporters of color. This would lend a voice to the conversation that is more representative of our community.
