The letter I saw in the paper last week detailing the value of including people, who are unfortunately spoken of as “disabled” in the community, was beautifully written. From the perspective of one who understands and works daily with these individuals, the comments about employment were appreciated. People living with significant challenges have valuable talents to contribute. Additionally, they have much to teach us about unconditional love, patience and courage.

Several years ago, I wrote a letter suggesting ways in which Gainesville could be a model community by including every citizen, no matter their barriers.

Randy and I want to deeply thank all the businesses that have hired people with significant challenges. The business owners have said these adults bring positive value to their company. We want to especially acknowledge the businesses that go beyond to find a place that includes people with exceptional abilities on their team. By taking time to look past a person’s limitations to discover their abilities means there is respect for the entire population.

Randy and Friends has been working for the past several years to discover people’s talents and prepare them for employment in the community. There is a place for each young adult that fits their gifts and interests. Patience and interest in this can lead to a winning solution. The new hires are excited about the opportunity to achieve their dreams of more independence. Just as important, they gain dignity, purpose and a feeling of success. The businesses win because all team members develop a new understanding of team work and appreciation for people that might previously been overlooked, because of their differences.
