Opinion: Our region should have more options for surgical care

I am a prostate cancer patient who has spent his entire life in Hall County — using local doctors at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Now, I am seeking to have my prostate removed this year to give me peace of mind that the cancer is under control.

However, because our local health system is out of network with Anthem, I have been unable to get my surgery scheduled while still covered by insurance.

I understand Northside Hospital is seeking a state permit to open a surgery center close by in Braselton.

In the meantime, I will travel 30 minutes to Northside Hospital in Cumming this winter to have my procedure done and in network with my insurance.

Unless you have health issues, you don’t understand how frustrating and ridiculous it is to deal with just one system — and one that now won’t take your insurance. With all the growth happening in Hall County, I urge the state to give our community another option for surgical care.
