Several years ago there were discussions on how to deter traffic from going through the middle of Gainesville on Green Street. I’m not sure which departments were involved, but South Enota Drive was widened from Park Hill Drive to the now Jesse Jewell Parkway. The idea was that into Gainesville traffic on U.S. 129 would be diverted or directed away from going through to the south side of Gainesville.
Years later, Limestone Parkway was designed from Cleveland Highway over to Interstate 985. This was also an idea to divert traffic around Gainesville. Since everyone knew that Green Street was the most direct route from one end to the other, that route was designated 129 Business and 129 was moved to the Limestone Road. The idea was that everyone would automatically use Limestone and not go into Gainesville on Cleveland Highway/Park Hill Drive/Green Street.
My questions are: How many vehicles then were using Green Street before these projects? How many vehicles are diverted each day now? In other words, how great have the diversions been?
