It was certainly good news for the taxpayers of Hall County when it was decided that Glades Reservoir was not needed for future water supply. We have already spent nearly $20 million on this project with nothing to show for it. (I am embarrassed that as a Hall Commissioner in the 1990s, I had a part in the beginning of this boondoggle!)
We also have the $20 million Cedar Creek reservoir in East Hall sitting there nearly 20 years and yet to be used. I hope our current county commission realizes that since we have no water systems and no customers, we should not spend one more penny of Hall taxpayers’ money on future water supplies. Let the entities who operate the water systems develop water supplies as they are needed in the future. The idea of becoming a wholesale water supplier makes no economic sense and is a pipe dream (pun intended).
The best thing to do with the Glades property is to return it to the private sector, encourage its development as an amenities lake with a billion dollars plus added to our property tax digest in a few years. I hope our state leaders will resist the desire by some to buy the land from Hall, which would lead from one bad deal for taxpayers to another. Let Georgia Power or some other private entity own it.
