An East Jackson Comprehensive High School student was killed and another one injured in a car accident Tuesday afternoon, according to Jackson County Emergency Services.

Units from South Jackson Fire and Rescue, Jackson County EMS and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 4:18 p.m. to a car wreck at Ga. 129 South and New Kings Bridge Road.

Steve Nichols, director of the Jackson County Department of Emergency Services, said preliminary data from the Georgia State Patrol indicated that a car pulled out onto Ga. 129 in front of a tractor trailer.

The crash killed the car’s driver, 17-year-old Kason Dubose, a student at East Jackson High, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

Both the car’s passenger, 17-year-old East Jackson High student Brandon Garrett, and the truck driver, 45-year-old Kenneth Owens, were taken to area hospitals to be treated for injuries: Garrett to Athens Regional Medical Center and Owens to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

"As of this morning, the truck driver was hospitalized with back injuries, and the teenager is still in critical condition," Nichols said.

Pat Stueck, principal at East Jackson Comprehensive High School, said Dubose "had the greatest smile and made everyone feel good."

To help students deal with their loss, school administrators visited all of Dubose’s and Garrett’s classes, as well as those of Dubose’s sister, a ninth-grader at the school, Stueck said.

"We have had extra counselors on staff today, and we had several pastors from local churches who are also parents here all day long helping students," Stueck said.

The students organized a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Grove Level Baptist Church in Maysville. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Sunday in East Jackson Comprehensive High School’s auditorium.

Students also pitched in to make posters and write nice things about Dubose to send to the family, Stueck said.

"The students have been awesome," she said. "They’ve created all kinds of posters to celebrate him ... and I’m heartened by the wonderful things they’re saying about him."
