A federally funded initiative that bills itself as a “one-stop shop” for job improvement has found a new and bigger home off Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville.

WorkSource Georgia Mountains was off Hilton Drive in Gainesville before making the move this summer to Thompson Bridge Road, more than doubling its space and increasing visibility.

“We didn’t have the traffic going by or the parking (at the old location), and we deal with the public,” director John Phillips said Tuesday during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new 9,300-square-foot center.

WorkSource, funded by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, particularly helps “capitalize on the untapped potential” of underemployed workers, youth and other job seekers with special needs.

The program helps pay “for education and training to eligible individuals to enhance their current skills or learn a new trade,” according to the program’s website.

“We also supply funding and services for Georgians who lose their job as a result of plant closures, mass layoffs and other effects of the changing economy.”

WorkSource and Lanier Technical College in Oakwood are partners in a welding shop program

at the Hall County Correctional Institute’s welding shop, where members of an accountability court program can learn the trade before leaving prison.

“That’s targeting felons who are from Hall and Dawson counties,” said Warden Walt Davis, who was at Tuesday’s event. “That is not money that’s going out — it’s staying (local) — and hopefully, it will lead to people not (returning to crime).”

Heather J. Feldman, executive director of the Gainesville-based Georgia Mountains

Regional Commission, said the new center provides “ample room for what the staff needs.

“But in addition to that, it (enables) having the partners here, which is required under (the law).”

GMRC serves as the fiscal agent for WorkSource.

The other partners are North Georgia Technical College, Georgia Department of Labor, Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency, Athens Technical College, Lanier Technical College and Legacy Link Area Agency on Aging.
