Two years ago, the idea of a charity for women was planted in Jackie Wallace’s head while at a conference in Denver.
Fast forward to 2008.
Wallace, the president and chief professional officer of United Way Hall County, along with prominent women from other Hall County organizations, are ready to launch WomenSource, a local resource that will connect women with services to help them achieve personal and professional success.
"It took roots. We planted the seeds, and now we’ve got a little bitty seeding," Wallace said.
The founders of WomenSource said they think there are already a number of good resources for women in the community, but there is a need for an organizing body that could guide women to the services.
"We in no way want to duplicate the services that are already out there," said LeTrell Simpson, the marketing committee chairwoman. "We will be very dependent upon what are the needs of the community."
WomenSource is sponsored by the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County, United Way of Hall County and the North Georgia Community Foundation.
Dixie Truelove, past president of the Junior League, will be chairwoman for WomenSource.
"The league is well known for starting agencies," Truelove said, citing examples such as the Edmondson-Telford Center for Children and The Guest House, both local charities started by the Junior League.
There are already about 20 women volunteering through fundraising and marketing for WomenSource.
WomenSource will host events like brown bag lunches that will feature speakers and panel discussions on a variety of topics that affect women in the community, such as women’s health, divorce and finances.
The inaugural fundraising membership drive, "The Power of the Purse," is set for Sept. 11 at Brenau University and will include dinner and a fashion show.
Truelove said the fashion show will feature clothes from local retailers and all of the models will be local women.
Memberships cost $35, and founding memberships are $1,000.
"It really is our chance to have a conversation with a large group to let them know how they can get involved," Truelove said.
