A Buford woman was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital Friday with serious burns after a grease fire erupted at her home on Thompson Mill Road.

Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said firefighters responded to the single-story woodframe house at 3320 Thompson Mill Road shortly before 2 p.m. Friday.

A kitchen fire had already been extinguished after a man working at a nearby shop heard the woman’s screams and put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher, Cagle said.

The woman was cooking french fries for two small boys when the grease caught fire, Cagle said. She tried to take the pan outside and it spilled, causing second- and third-degree burns over 30 percent of her body, he said.

The woman, who was not named by fire officials but was described as being in her 30s, was taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital. Her condition was not known.

The children were picked up by a grandmother, Cagle said.

Fire officials responded to another fire call at about 3:20 p.m. Friday in the 3500 block of Bell Lane in Talmo, where approximately three acres of woodlands, a storage shed and a pop-up camper had caught fire.

The structures were destroyed, but a nearby residence had only minor damage.

The owner was not home at the time of the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
