Wiring problem caused overnight Sunday house fire

Gainesville fire officials have determined that a wiring problem sparked a blaze that destroyed an unoccupied house overnight Sunday.

Fire was consuming the back of the house in the 200 block of Forrest Avenue when firefighters arrived. The call came in about 1:30 a.m.

Crews were able to enter the home and partially put out the fire, but "the roof and section of the second level had collapsed" and firefighters had to leave and switch to a defensive mode, Chief Jon Canada said.

The owner later arrived and said he was going to rent the house but that "no one could occupy the house yet," Canada said.

No one was injured. The estimated damage amount is $175,000.
