Howard Road may be no more if Georgia Mountains YMCA has its way.
The nonprofit organization is asking Gainesville to change the name of the road to YMCA Drive. Howard Road runs between White Sulphur Road and Ga. 365, passing by the YMCA at 2455 Howard Road.
The request is set to be heard by the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board on July 9.
“We’re in a position now where we are rapidly growing and even serving communities outside of Hall County,” said Amy Kienle, CEO, on Tuesday, June 25. “A lot of questions we get are in terms of our location, and we just thought a (road) name change would better identify where we are.”
“If approved, the YMCA property has a Howard Road address which will need to be changed,” according to the agenda item.
The document notes that a similar request was approved in 2017 to rename a portion of Howard Road on the east side of Ga. 365 to Lanier Tech Drive.
That renaming was part of Lanier Tech relocating to that area from Oakwood. The new campus started classes in January 2019.
