A sinkhole has forced Gainesville to close part of a trail in Gainesville’s Rock Creek Veterans Park at 223 Northside Drive.

“City crews have been working to address the sinkhole, which is secured by barricades and blocked off from the public,” a city press release on Friday, Feb. 7, states.

The sinkhole was first spotted Monday, Feb. 3, beneath a sidewalk and was described at the time as about 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep.

Steady rain throughout the week worsened the hole, which has grown to about 8 feet wide and 8 feet deep, the city said.
