A contractor laying a sewer line on Thompson Bridge Road hit a water main this morning, flooding areas of Club Drive.

As a result, Club Drive was closed for part of the day from Thompson Bridge Road to Woodlake Drive.

The contractor, Strack Construction, hit an 8-inch water main underneath Club Drive when attempting to drill underneath the road, Gainesville’s Public Utilities Director Kelly Randall said.

Utility department employees were able to shut off the water within 30 minutes of the incident, and no significant water outages were expected, Randall said.

"Since the road is torn up, we’ll probably go ahead and lay the sanitary sewer and the force main at the same time," Randall said.

The contractor is currently building a sewer line that will run from Thompson Bridge to Fieldale Farms in Murrayville. Construction on the line, which will bring more sewer capacity to North Hall residents, is slated for completion in January.
