An alleged drug deal ending in the death of the man police say was the dealer has led to two men being indicted on felony murder charges.

Rodnie Maurice Stokes, 27, and Leshan Tremiele Tanner, 42, of Gainesville, were indicted Tuesday in the death of Cedric Antonio Huff, 41, in a June 5 shooting on West Avenue.

Stokes and Tanner allegedly shot Huff with a 9 mm handgun after attempting to purchase half a pound of marijuana and entering Huff’s apartment with intent to rob him, according to the indictment.

Huff was shot in the abdomen and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he underwent surgery. He was pronounced dead June 23 due to the injuries from the shooting, according to police.

Tanner was arrested June 22 and charged with felony murder. Police searched for Stokes for a month and arrested him July 16.

Charged jointly, Stokes and Tanner were indicted on charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempt to purchase marijuana and three counts of felony murder.

At a pretrial hearing for Tanner, Gainesville police Detective Gordon Hendry testified about phone messages between Tanner and Stokes that included discussion of a plan to buy marijuana and rob Huff.

When searching Huff’s residence, 3.5 pounds of marijuana, scales and bags were found by police.

A shell casing from a 9 mm handgun was found on the couch, and the round was found in the ceiling, Hendry said.

Separately, Stokes was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and an additional felony murder count.
