A disagreement over a wheelchair prop escalated into a brawl that hospitalized a Johnson High School drama student and resulted in criminal charges against another student.

Thomas Aaron Crumbley, 18, was treated for a head injury at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Wednesday and released to his parents, deputy and school officials said.

The senior's hospitalization followed a physical confrontation with a 16-year-old underclassman in Johnson's performing arts center around 10 a.m., said Gordon Higgins, spokesman for Hall County Schools.

The argument started during a class change when Crumbley questioned the teen about taking a wheelchair from the room where items are kept for the school's theater productions, Higgins added.

"The senior student said, ‘You're not supposed to have that and put it back,'" Higgins said, relaying the details told to him by Johnson officials. "The altercation started after that."

The juvenile student, who is not involved with any drama events at the school, advanced the confrontation to an assault, Higgins said, again referencing school administrators.

Crumbley was knocked unconscious during the argument.

Deputies arrested the teen, who was charged with one count of aggravated battery and taken to Regional Youth Detention Center.

In addition to criminal charges, the teen has been suspended from school and will face a disciplinary tribunal, Higgins said.

What that will entail is a review of Johnson Principal Damon Gibbs' recommendations by a council of Hall County Schools administrators. The student's testimony will be considered.

"The student will have an opportunity to speak on his behalf," Higgins said.
