An Oakwood man was arrested Wednesday night after a five-hour standoff with law enforcement officers that began after he reportedly fired numerous rounds from a shotgun from his back porch.

Stanley Reed, 56, was charged with reckless conduct, convicted felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault on a police officer, Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland said.

Deputies were called to a home on Stacy Drive at about 5 p.m. after reports that a drunken man had fired several rounds from a shotgun, Strickland said. After the man refused to answer the door, the sheriff’s SWAT Team was called in, mobilizing at about 6 p.m.

Officers tried for the next four hours to negotiate with the man by public address system, phone and megaphone, but he refused to come out, Strickland said. Reed finally emerged from his home wielding a large kitchen knife in his carport at about 10 p.m., Strickland said. After he ignored commands to drop the knife, officers subdued Reed by shooting him twice in the midsection with nonlethal "bean bag" rounds fired from a shotgun, Strickland said. Reed was arrested and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for his injuries, which were not believed to be serious.

Authorities seized a loaded shotgun and a rifle from Reed’s home. No one else was in the house at the time of the standoff.
