Ace Electric Inc. of Marietta employees Adam Leach, left, and Nick Lindsley prepare to wire a portion of the new Sonic Drive-In facade Friday afternoon. The restaurant is occupying the former Chic-fil-A location at the corner of Shallowford Road and Pearl Nic Parkway and will feature indoor seating.

Fans of tater tots, burgers and slushies available by drive-in will soon have reason to celebrate.

Sonic restaurant is renovating the former Chick-fil-A restaurant on the corner of Shallowford Road and Pearl Nix Parkway in Gainesville.

Sonic previously was located on Dawsonville Highway, in the same location the Chick-fil-A moved to last summer.

“We approached them,” said Drew Lewis with the Shopping Center Group. “They’d been in the market and had been in Gainesville before. With the success Chick-fil-A had there, they thought it’d be a good site. So we were able to work out a deal there.”

Lewis said Sonic hopes to open this summer, following some interior and exterior renovations to the building.

The restaurant was a good fit for the shopping center for a number of reasons, he said.

“We wanted somebody to utilize the building and location, and we wanted somebody to utilize that drive-through,” Lewis said. “Sonic met both of those, and it’s a good credit tennant. And they were willing to pay a good rate for the site.”
