A student at Banks County High School was injured this morning at the high school by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office.

A statement on the school’s website calls the incident an attempted suicide.

“The student has been taken to the hospital and the student’s parents have been notified. No other student is currently at risk,” the statement reads. “The emergency lockdown procedures of the school safety plan were immediately implemented and have worked as planned. Our thoughts are with the student and family.”

According to Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman, the 16-year-old male student sustained a “self-inflicted” gunshot room just after 8 a.m. in one of the bathrooms of the school.

He said the student was the only one in the bathroom at the time.

“As far as we know and as far as we could determine, it was not witnessed (by other students),” Chapman said. “He was by himself.”

The student was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Chapman could not speak to the extent of the student’s injuries, but said he was “severely injured.”

There are no updates as to his status.

Chapman said although the handgun was recovered from the scene, the school went into a lockdown after the incident, and his department, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Patrol and Department of Public Safety helped keep the area secure.

Students were finally released around 2 p.m. after dogs swept the school. Chapman did say there was a “suspicious package” in one of the lockers, but it turned out to be nothing.

“The students at the school showed a very tremendous maturity and patience as the investigation continued throughout the morning,” said Chapman. “The administration and school staff enacted safety measures immediately. We’re very appreciative of the school administration with what they did and the patience of the parents.”

Attempts to obtain a comment from the Banks County School System were unsuccessful Friday.

The GBI is helping with the investigation and a release is expected soon.
