As John Barge, state school superintendent-elect, transitions to office this January, he'll have some help from Hall County.
Barge recently named Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield as chairman of his transition team.
"Will is very well known across the state and across the country and is a highly respected superintendent. He's a forward and progressive speaker and just the right person to be a bridge between us and the rest of the school superintendents in the state," Barge said Wednesday.
Barge will succeed Brad Bryant, who was appointed to the post when former superintendent Kathy Cox resigned in June to take charge of a new Washington education group.
Last month, he won his race with 53 percent of the vote, compared to 41 percent by his opponent, Joe Martin.
Schofield said he's looking forward to the opportunity and expects educators across the state will rally behind Barge as he makes his transition.
Barge said Schofield, who is in his fourth year as the Hall County superintendent, will lead committee meetings and drive discussions. An introductory conference meeting with the team will be held this afternoon.
"There's a significant number of personnel shifts he'll be making, and I have a history with individuals in the state. I'll provide a good sounding board for him," Schofield said of the position.
Schofield added that Barge has the experience to understand challenges at the various levels of education.
Barge has been a teacher; a principal, leading Chestatee High School in Hall County; a school district administrator; and a Georgia Department of Education employee.
"He brings a rich set of experiences," Schofield said. "Plus, out of the gate, the governor-elect has had a cooperative relationship with him, which is always good for public education in Georgia."
Barge will be sworn into office Jan. 10.
