If you are frustrated by the many Hall County roads under construction, there will be a break for the holiday weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend all lane closures through 10 p.m. Monday to accommodate Memorial Day weekend traffic.

"It’s a holiday from construction," said Assistant District Construction Engineer Brandon Kirby. "It should be event-free."

That includes the area of Dawsonville Highway north of Gainesville, where work continues to make the road four lanes. As part of the ongoing project, Sardis Road has undergone a slew of improvements just within the past week.

"They’re widening (Ga.) 53, so as they get to each of these intersections, they’re doing intersection improvements on them," DOT Spokesman Mark McKinnon said.

These improvements include adding turn lanes, new striping for crosswalks and LED traffic lights.

"The LEDs are a lot brighter and can be visible from a much further distance," McKinnon said. "They’re not just the old bulb signals we used to have."

Kirby said he doesn’t expect the changes to Sardis Road will cause any trouble for motorists.

"We hope that we’re making the road safer and more functional," he said.

Construction on Sardis Road should be completed by the end of next month.

"Specifically the Chestatee/Sardis Road intersection, they’ve got to finish work there and install the signal, and they’ll be concentrating on that between now and the end of June," Kirby said.

The project to widen Ga. 53 into a divided, four-lane highway began more than two years ago, and most of the work is complete. Kirby said depending on the weather, construction on the entire project should be finished this summer.
