The beach at River Forks Park has reopened after a test of the water determined E. coli levels are now safe.

The beach closed Friday, May 31, due to bacteria in the water attributed to geese. A sample taken Thursday returned 550 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters. The highest level of E. coli considered still safe is 126 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters.

But the water sampled Monday returned less than 10 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters, according to Brian Wiley, environmental services manager with Gainesville Water Resources.

Gainesville Water Resources tests the water at River Forks and other swimming beaches weekly to monitor for bacteria.

River Forks Park is at 3500 Keith Bridge Road in Gainesville.
