Proposed Howard Road extensions future is uncertain

The economic downturn has forced Gainesville to shelve conceptual plans for the Howard Road extension, which would connect Ga. 365 to U.S. 129/Athens Highway, said traffic engineer Dee Taylor.

"The future of this project is uncertain," he said in an e-mail last week.

Taylor discussed the proposal in March at a meeting of the Gainesville-Hall County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The road, as earlier drawn, would start at Howard Road, near the Georgia Mountains YMCA, and travel along Oconee Circle and Miller Drive, near the Rabbittown community. It also would cross Floyd Road before ending up at U.S. 129 near Lenox Drive.

"Basically, this is an exploratory device to see what needs (there are) and what sort of (traffic) problems that would be solved, and how this particular road would address development," Taylor said in March.
