Hall County sheriff’s investigators Friday interviewed a woman who was with a Gainesville man at a car rental center the day before his body was found dumped on the side of an interstate in Louisiana, dead of a gunshot wound.

Hall County Sheriff’s Maj. Jeff Strickland said the woman called authorities Thursday after recognizing herself in a surveillance camera image that was distributed to area news media outlets. Authorities had asked the public’s help in identifying the woman, who was with 30-year-old Miguel Angel Ayala on Dec. 11 at the Hertz Rent A Car on Browns Bridge Road.

The following day, the bodies of Ayala and another Gainesville man, Felipe Alonzo Maximo, were found dead from gunshot wounds four miles apart on Interstate 12, some 30 miles north of New Orleans.

Strickland, who did not identify the woman, said she is being questioned as a "person of the interest" in the case, and that she had not been named as a suspect in the killings. The St. Tammany Parish, LA., Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murders. Calls to a spokesman for that agency were not immediately answered Friday.
