Gwinnett County police seized 91 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 between Buford and Flowery Branch.

Gwinnett County police intercepted a minivan carrying 91 pounds of marijuana on Interstate 85 near Flowery Branch, officials said Wednesday.

Cpl. Edwin Ritter said an officer with the department’s Highway Interdiction Team pulled over a 1999 Nissan Quest shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday when it was spotted following too closely to a car in front of it in the northbound lanes of I-85 between Buford and Flowery Branch.

Something raised the suspicions of the officer during the stop and he asked to search the car, officials said. The driver gave consent, and the officer found two large black garbage bags in the cargo area of the van.

The bags contained seven bales of marijuana weighing a total of 91.2 pounds, Ritter said.

Authorities estimated the street value of the drug at $408,576.

Jose Aboytes, 25, of Jacksonville, was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana, following too closely and not having a driver’s license.

He is also being held on immigration violations, according to Gwinnett County jail records.
