A Gainesville man is accused of putting another man in a chokehold last week in Gainesville and taking hundreds of dollars, police said.

Marquis Mantez Thomas, 27, is charged with aggravated assault and robbery by force. He was booked Tuesday night in to the Hall County Jail, where he remains.

Gainesville Police said the victim was on Georgia Avenue in Gainesville around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 11 when he was approached by a man.

“The male subject immediately hit him with a closed fist,” Sgt. Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email.

According to the warrant, Thomas then allegedly put the victim into a chokehold, causing him “to begin to lose consciousness.”

Holbrook said Thomas reportedly demanded money. According to the warrant, Thomas allegedly took $340 from the victim.
