Gainesville Police and Fire departments are hosting the second annual Public Safety Academy, with registration now under way.

The 10-week program is designed to let residents get a behind-the-scenes look at the agencies. The classes include crime prevention, gangs and narcotics, and fire safety.

Students also will participate in a police patrol ride-along and suit up in 50 pounds of firefighting gear.

Classes will be held 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays May 29-Aug. 7. The registration deadline is May 11.

According to a news release, the two agencies teamed up this year as they have new facilities on the same property, where they can accommodate a larger group of students.

Enrollment is open to all Hall County residents 21 or older who have a clear criminal history; students will be subject to a background check. Class size is limited to 25 students.

Registration forms are available online or by calling Cpl. Kevin Holbrook or Cpl. Joe Britte at 770-287-0893.
