The Hall County Planning Commission has recommended approval for a fiber optic cable company’s plans to open for business at the former Georgia Department of Transportation maintenance shop and surrounding property off Spout Springs Road in South Hall.

The Board of Commissioners will vote Jan. 26 on whether to give the final approval needed for Flowery Branch-based Ideal Communications to rezone the 3-acre property to highway business from agricultural-residential.

The long-abandoned shop would be used as an office and storage space, according to the application.

Planning Commissioner Don Smallwood said having Ideal move in would help clean up the property, which would benefit neighboring residents.

In other business, the planning commission recommended allowing North Lanier Storage to build out its business at a wooded property along Browns Bridge Road at Sherri Drive.

However, planning officials want county commissioners to require that the storage company do what is necessary to improve the one-lane Sherri Road to limit traffic congestion for neighboring residents.

It is unclear if Sherri Drive is a county-maintained road or a private road. The business owner said he is willing to develop turn lanes to reduce the potential for congestion.
