A Gainesville woman died early Tuesday after her teenage son accidentally shot her while preparing to clean a rifle, authorities said.

Mary N. Bailey, 52, was shot once in the upper torso and succumbed to her injuries at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Hall County sheriff’s Maj. Jeff Strickland said.

Strickland said Bailey was sleeping on a sofa in her mobile home at 325 Highland Terrace, located off Atlanta Highway, at about 2 a.m. when her son, 19-year-old Derrick Bailey, was preparing to clean a .308-caliber hunting rifle.

Strickland said the teen removed the magazine from the rifle, but a round remained in the chamber, and as he was laying the gun down on a chair, his finger pulled the trigger. The gun went off, hitting Mary Bailey. Emergency responders rushed Mary Bailey to the hospital, where she died.

After consulting with the Hall County District Attorney’s office, officials have decided not to charge Derrick Bailey, Strickland said.

"Evidence at the scene matched the statement of the son," Strickland said.

The death was ruled accidental.
