Gainesville fire fighters put out a small fire at a vacant structure on the old ferris wheel property Monday afternoon.

Deputy Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough said the fire at 2322 Browns Bridge Road was likely started by homeless people who were trying to keep warm.

Firefighters were able to contain the small fire to the corner of the 8,000-square-foot building and extinguish it within minutes, Yarbrough said.

The vacant building had signs that homeless people were living inside of it, but no one was on the property when firefighters arrived, Yarbrough said.
