Oakwood updating city cemetery, trying to find where bodies are buried
0825OAKWOOD 0005
The oldest readable headstone in Oakwood Cemetery is from 1903. There are 777 known graves in the cemetery, but a few more are expected to be found with probing.
Whenever someone asks about plots in the City Cemetery, Oakwood City Clerk Tangee Puckett has to pull out a yellowed, torn and rumpled map. The city has decided it’s time to bring the 4-acre graveyard off Plainview Road into the21st century in an effort that would produce digital records. To carry out the effort, Oakwood has contracted with the Gainesville-based Georgia Mountains Regional Commission for mapping and data management work.
