A Mount Airy man was killed when his pickup truck traveled down an embankment on a Maysville road, according to authorities.

Robert Turpin, 19, was identified as the man found dead Tuesday in Jackson County.

Georgia State Patrol said Turpin was driving southbound in a Ford F-150 pickup truck on Gillsville Road along a left curve north of Bold Road.

“It is unknown how long the driver had been there or when this crash occurred,” state patrol said Tuesday.

State patrol said Turpin traveled onto the west shoulder and began rotating.

“The pickup then traveled down an embankment and overturned onto its right side,” according to state patrol. “The pickup continued to overturn and traveled down the embankment.”

The truck struck a tree with its top.

The car was discovered by a passing motorist, who flagged down a trooper Tuesday.

Rescue personnel had to extricate the man, who was found dead and trapped inside the vehicle.
