A Gainesville woman was accused of beating a child with a belt and throwing her into furniture, according to authorities. The arrest comes roughly a month after the victim’s father was charged.
Catarina Alonzo-Carmelo, 33, was charged with first-degree child cruelty.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth said Alonzo-Carmelo allegedly “beat her 14-year-old daughter on and about her back with a metal studded belt and threw her into furniture, causing a black eye.”
Investigators believe this happened between April 1 and June 24.
Deputies were called out June 24 to the home, and the victim’s father, Diego Jorge Diego, 35, of Gainesville, was also charged with first-degree child cruelty.
“Mr. Diego had beaten his minor daughter ... with a belt, on her back, leaving severe bruising and visible marks,” Lt. Scott Ware wrote in a news release.
Booth said Alonzo-Carmelo was being held at the Hall County Jail on a $8,450 bond. Diego was released from the jail June 29.
No attorney information was available Monday, July 29, for Alonzo-Carmelo, and Diego’s attorney Alex McQueen did not return a request for comment.
