More charges were filed this week against a former employee of a nonprofit agency accused of stealing money to pay for extracurricular activities for dozens of children.

Kimberly Nicole Austin, who previously was accused of about $45,000 in thefts from Avita Community Partners, was charged this week with an additional six counts of theft by deception totaling about $16,000.

Warrants filed by Flowery Branch police accuse Austin of fraudulently filling out application forms in order to enroll children in programs with the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department. One count of theft by deception charges that Austin improperly funneled $7,000 in Avita money to enroll 13 children in Parks and Rec programs.

Avita Community Partners is a Flowery Branch-based nonprofit agency that serves 13 Northeast Georgia counties. Avita provides individual and family services for people suffering from mental illness, developmental disabilities and addictions. It receives state and federal funding.

Austin worked at the agency processing applications for Avita’s summer recreation programs for about three years until she was fired in July.

Authorities believe Austin forged applications in order to pay for basketball camps, band dues and Gainesville High School dance team expenses for dozens of children, including her daughters. None were eligible for the money, police said.

More charges are expected in the suspected theft of Avita money that went to the Hall County YMCA, authorities said.

Austin, 31, was a volunteer dance team coach at Gainesville High School for about two years before her September arrest.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer also said school officials are cooperating with police. Authorities say so far there is no indication that school employees were aware of the scheme.
