A South Carolina man is awaiting extradition to Georgia in connection with a multi-state oil theft ring, which investigators estimate cost victims about $100,000, Hall County Sheriff's Office reported late Wednesday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Robert Hunter Charping, 50, of Greer, S.C. Deputies said a second Greer man was identified as being involved in the September theft, but he died in a car wreck last month.

The investigation here started with a reported theft of bulk oil at Milton Martin Honda last September.

Video surveillance from the dealership showed a tanker truck backing up to the businesses' bulk oil storage containers, deputies reported. More than 1,000 gallons of oil were reported stolen at a value of $6,000 in that incident.

Hall County patrol officers raced to the same car dealership the early morning hours of Jan. 21 when they received reports of a similar looking truck leaving the lot. Officers stopped the truck and used the information from that report to link the men to the earlier theft, deputies said.

Charping is wanted in connection with other oil thefts in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, deputies said. Federal charges may follow as South Carolina investigators have contacted the FBI.
