Lula officials approved a special election June 16 to replace late Councilwoman Vicky Chambers.
At the council’s last work session, Mayor Milton Turner said the council could chose to do a March election to fill Chambers’ seat, but the council unanimously approved the June election he proposed.
City Manager Dennis Bergin prepared an ordinance for the council to approve.
“This determines the special election on Tuesday, June 16, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” Bergin said. “The position is open for the special election.”
The qualifying period for the position will be May 4-6.
Lula City Council is also planning to honor Chambers’ memory.
Bergin said “she made a great impression on the city.”
Chambers, 57, died following a Jan. 10 wreck on Joe Chandler Road, when her Toyota Sienna was struck by a Honda Accord driven by Joshua W. Armour, 23, of Gainesville, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
A grand jury has indicted Armour and charged him with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, misdemeanor driving under the influence, reckless driving, no insurance, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the road, open container and seat-belt violation.
