Low-cost pneumonia vaccine available

The 13 county health departments in Northeast Georgia’s District 2 Public Health region are offering discount pneumococcal vaccine to patients who are at risk for pneumonia.

The vaccine normally costs $46, but for a limited time, it will be available for just $14. District 2 spokesman Dave Palmer said a federal subsidy has enabled the district to temporarily reduce the price, but quantities of the vaccine are limited.

To be eligible for the shot, you must be in one of the following at-risk categories: age 65 or older; older than age 2 with a chronic health problem such as diabetes or heart disease; older than age 2 with a condition that weakens the immune system, such as cancer, HIV or taking medications that lower the body’s resistance to infection.

For more information, contact your county’s health department or call District 2 at 770-535-5743.
