A 70 year-old Lilburn man drowned Saturday in Lake Lanier near Sawnee Campground.

The victim was identified as Osvaldo Braziunas of Planters Row in Lilburn, according to Sgt. Eric Silveus of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Division.

Silveus said Braziunas attempted to swim to a small island in the lake about 2 p.m. at the campground near Buford Dam. Family members saw him go under the lake and called 911.

The victim was recovered about 30 minutes later by members of the Forsyth County Fire Department dive team.

The drowning was the third of the year on Lake Lanier. A 4-year-old girl died last month after being rescued from the lake at Lower Overlook Park. In June, a man died in the lake after jumping from Bell's Mill Bridge.
