Latino and African-American political organizers will meet Monday afternoon for what is being called a historic alliance to protest Gainesville’s at-large voting system. The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials and the local Newtown Florist Club are working together to end an electoral system wherein voters across the city cast ballots for all candidates, which they claim is discriminatory to minorities. Opponents want to replace this method with a district voting system, whereby only voters in a particular geographic area select a candidate from their ward to represent them.
