A large tree fell across Forrest Avenue in Gainesville on Saturday, knocking down power lines.

Gainesville police and firefighters responded and blocked traffic entering from Bradford and Green streets.

Firefighters said the seemingly endless downpour of rain in recent days caused the tree to be uprooted. It landed in the neighbors’ yard across the street, taking power lines and a pole down with it.

Georgia Power crews responded to restore power to affected homes and businesses. Carol Boatright with Georgia Power reported 90 customers were without power in the Northeast region of Hall County, and 60 without power in Gainesville.

Mary Dell Head, whose law at 320 Forrest Ave. the tree fell onto, said she knew the tree was going to fall.

“I’m so grateful it didn’t get my roof,” Head said. “I’ve been worried about it for a long time.”
