Keep Hall Beautiful employee Scott Broome, left, and volunteer Elizabeth Ball work a section of Chestnut Street collecting trash Thursday afternoon. Keep Hall Beautiful set a record for litter collected this year, according to Gainesville City Councilman George Wangemann.
In breaking its previous annual record for collecting litter, Keep Hall Beautiful has picked up nearly 80,000 pounds of trash from the grounds of Hall County since last summer. With the help of 894 volunteers and almost 400 residents fulfilling community service hours, the nonprofit dedicated to cleaning up Hall County beat its previous record of last year’s 64,000 pounds. To offer some perspective, 80,000 pounds, or 40 tons, is the legal weight of an 18-wheeler.
