A Jefferson man was in critical condition Saturday after being shot in the leg in a South Hall home during a domestic dispute, authorities said.

Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland said 31-year-old Nicholas Causey was shot multiple times about 9:15 a.m. Saturday inside a home in the 7200 block of Litany Court off Spout Springs Road.

Strickland said 46-year-old Waymon E. Wheeler confronted his estranged wife and Causey at the home, forced his way inside and began fighting with Causey before shooting him with a large-caliber handgun.

Wheeler remained at the scene and was arrested without incident by responding deputies, Strickland said. Causey suffered substantial blood loss in the shooting and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Wheeler has been charged with aggravated battery.

It was the second time in less than 24 hours that an assault victim was airlifted to Grady from Hall County after a violent confrontation.

Steven Paul Brookshire, 36, remained in critical condition Saturday at Grady with severe head injuries after being struck with a stick during a fight outside a Ledan Extension home Friday afternoon.

Brookshire’s stepbrother, 26-year-old William R. Gable, remains jailed on a charge of aggravated battery.
